A Must “Sea” Place in Hong Kong: The Fish Market

No matter where you travel abroad, you will likely encounter markets; however, there is no place quite like Hong Kong’s Fish market in Mongkok (Kowloon). You probably have no interest taking a fish home with you in your suitcase, but there is nothing quite as awesome as seeing the incredible variety of colorful fish at Hong Kong’s market.

How to get there:

The best way to get to the market is through the subway system, which is a safe and cheap mode of transportation. Traveling this way will let you feel like a local. Once you get off at Prince Edward Station, just roam the streets!

What to expect:

There are a ton of street vendors selling little souvenirs, and you will definitely be overwhelmed by the amount of things you can buy. You will see vendors selling types of fruit that you have never heard of, as well as the better known dragon fruit and litchi. Be sure to try one of the fruits that you are unfamiliar with, as you may just find a new favorite fruit. No matter what, you have to try the coconut milk which you can drink straight from a coconut.

Head to the park in order to see a vast variety of beautifully colored birds, some of which are only native to China. This experience is unlike any other. Then, head over to the street filled with flowers. Go ahead and pop in and out of the little stores. The locals are charming and will be amused by your fascination with the wildly exotic flowers. Make sure to take lots of pictures!

Next, you will reach the streets with fish and animals galore. You will see children fawning over the pets, staring at puppies in the windows. If you love nature and animals, you’ll want to see this fascinating market. The streets are a little spread out, so if you cannot find them all, ask a local. Most of the locals can speak a little English and will be able to send you in the right direction.
