If you’re studying abroad or traveling in South East Asia, you should definitely make time to spend a weekend in the city of Siem Reap, Cambodia. Here are some pointers on where to go and what to see while you’re there.
Angkor Wat: One of the must-see things while you’re in Cambodia is the sunrise at the famous temple Angkor Wat. Although you’ll need to get up before the crack of dawn (literally), watching the sunrise from behind the temple is unlike anything you’ve ever seen and is definitely worth the early wake up. To arrange your trip to Angkor Wat you could book it in advance with one of the many tour companies that have shops in the main part of town (usually asking the front desk at your hostel or hotel is a good idea). You could also ask one of your tuk tuk drivers to pick you up where you’re staying and do the tour yourself. If you decide to take a tuk tuk it would be smart to ask your driver for a flat rate to be your personal tuk tuk driver for the day you go to Angkor Wat because there are a lot of other attractions nearby that are worth going to.
Angkor Thom: Once you’ve watched the sunrise and walked around Angkor Wat, you can go right down the street to one of the most unique temples in Cambodia called Angkor Thom. If you set up your Angkor Wat visit with one of the tour companies, they will most likely have a package deal that offers a stop at Angkor Thom as well. If you went with a tuk tuk driver then he’ll know where to go.
Food and Night Life
From restaurants, to street food, to bars and clubs, Pub Street has it all. During the day Pub Street is bustling with people, street vendors and food carts. Once the sun goes down the street becomes lit by neon signs and flooded by music from all the bars and clubs. Pub Street is where you will find all of the night life in Siem Reap.
Siem Reap Night Market
This is a market where the shopping can seem almost endless. With hundreds of stalls the night markets are a great place to go to buy whatever it is you are looking for. If you’re in need of souvenirs this is the place to go. If you’re brave enough, you can even get a fish pedicure.
